My soon-to-be ex-wife and I had still been living together up to this point. The divorce was agreed upon, but we were still friendly, so I just moved into the basement thinking that I’d find my own place once we worked out some of the details and I had a little more free time.
After things went south and I started talking to a lawyer, I found out that I was making a huge mistake. Turns out that California has this thing called “legal separation.” Since we hadn’t legally separated and were still living in the same house, the state would view us as still married. This was a big deal because it meant that when it came time to divide assets, any new debt she took on would get split with me and vice versa.
Lesson learned and now we’re officially separated in the eyes of the law. Wish I could say it felt good, but it’s kind of a bitter pill to swallow. Making that legit made me realize that things are in motion now. Guess I’m feeling maudlin, but we both definitely think it’s the best for both of us.
